The Project was inspired from High Tech High School's PBL in Chemistry. My students were given the option of designing a mask, CD cover, or superhero/villain for a selected Periodic table element.
Chemistry students were given the option to create an Identity Mask for an element of their choosing. To promote student choice, they were given 2 additional alternatives for their selected element: create a superhero/villain + story or CD cover with a poem/song that incorporates the element's properties.
Collaborative groups researched lab demonstrations to review a gas law. Students were given the opportunity to become experts and teach their peers.

Students collaborated on Cube inquiry activity which allowed them to practice writing a Claims-Evidence-Reasoning statement. Groups selected a representative to share their findings with the class.
CER and PBL were combined in the Stoichiometry unit. Students were asked, "How do airbags work to save lives?" Collaborative groups developed their CER statement and presented this to the whole class to receive feedback. Then, they revised it as we learned about stoichiometry and completed individual research on airbags. The end goal was for students to create a model airbag to test their hypothesis.
